Chelsea are searching for a long-term successor to Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked earlier this season and replaced with interim boss Rafael Benitez until the end of the season.
The shortlist of candidates for to take over the reins at Chelsea became even shorter in recent week when former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola agreed to take over at Bayern Munich next season and Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp turned down the Stamford Bridge job.
And it appears that Malaga coach Pellegrini has moved to the top of the possibilities, which also includes Everton’s David Moyes, as owner Roman Abramovich looks to finalise the search for a new manager.
Pellegrini, the 59-year-old who formerly managed Real Madrid, is under contract with Malaga until the summer of 2015 and has already turned down an offer to move to Italy to take charge of Serie A side Roma.
“Manuel has a contract with Malaga,” Pellegrini’s agent Jesus Martinez told Chilean newspaper El Mercurio. “I think that in April and May we will be clear about what will happen with his future. Our first intention is to respect our commitment, but it also depends on what the conditions are.
“We had a formal offer from Roma, but we rejected it. It was less than 15 days ago, but we discarded it outright because we are in the middle of the season.
“Chelsea and other clubs have asked, but only through intermediaries, nothing official. Manuel would love to coach in the English Premier League, as he would in Germany, Italy and other important leagues. There’s plenty of time to analyse what we will do next season.”
Pellegrini, who has also managed Villarreal, has been in charge of Malaga for the past two years and steered the club into the Champions League this season. He currently has Brazilian star Lucas Piazon on loan from Chelsea.
