Sunzu was set to join Reading last month on a free transfer, but the move was thwarted because his club – Democratic Republic of Congo-based TP Mazembe – claimed he was under contract until 2015 and demanded a £4million transfer fee.
The 23-year-old centre-back has yet to resolve his contractually issues having only just finished international duties with Zambia at the African Cup of Nations in which the defending champions exited at the quarter-final stage.
But he could yet get his dream Premier League move in the summer with Sunderland set to rival Reading for the giant defender’s signature, according to the Sunderland Echo.
Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill will make signing a central defender his priority in the summer with Titus Bramble and Matt Kilgallon out of contract and set to depart on free transfers and Kadar Mangane yet to play during his loan spell at the club.
Wes Brown, meanwhile, has yet to play a single game this season because of injuries and is unlikely to make an appearance until the start of the new campaign at the earliest.
