Mercato365 claim that Arsenal scouts were in attendance as Lyon thrashed Bordeaux last weekend.

The North London club were on a watching brief monitoring Lyon defensive midfielder Maxime Gonalons and playmaker Clément Grenier.

The Ligue 1 side are known to be in something of a financial pickle and as a result had to sell the likes of Hugo Lloris and Michel Bastos to Tottenham and Schalke respectively last summer. The Stade Gerland side may well be challenging for the domestic title this term but appear to still need to sell star performers to balance the books.

Lyon owner Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed that his club will need to offload at least three players to make ends meet and this could well have some bearing on Arsenal’s decision to take a closer look at their best performers.

Grenier impressed greatly during his side’s win over Bordeaux, scoring twice and providing an assist. The 22 year old one club man is on the fringes of the senior French national team set-up and is the type of creative talent that Arsene Wenger is known to target, being both comfortable on the ball and an adaptable talent who cab play in a number of roles.

Enforcer Gonalons is perhaps a tad more one-dimensional but it would appear that Arsenal are in more urgent need of a defensive midfield presence than yet another attack minded midfielder so Wenger may well be more likely to make an offer for the 23 year old Lyon captain.
