Eccentric Italian Paolo Di Canio is reportedly a leading candidate to take over as West Ham boss if current manager Sam Allardyce is not offered a new contract according to the Daily Mirror.
fanatix tickets – West Ham vs Tottenham tickets are on sale from £67 for the match on February 25th at Upton Park.
Having resigned as Swindon Town boss the former Hammers favourite it available to take over at Upton Park should the opportunity arise and this source believes the 44 year old is a contender to manage the East London club.
Though Allardyce guided West Ham back into the top flight he is yet to be offered a new deal and with his current contract coming to an end this summer there is growing speculation that joint-owners David Gold and David Sullivan may look to bring in a new boss.
Di Canio was a success at the County Ground, winning 54 and losing 23 of his 95 matches in charge of the Wiltshere side, helping them to the League Two title in his first season in charge and having taken the club to a top six spot in League One before quitting the club because of off-field events, including the sale of Matt Ritchie.
Di Canio had said he would leave if the Football League didn’t agree to the purchase of the club by new owners by 17:00 GMT on Monday stating;
“I’ve been told approval has not been granted yet and therefore my temporary arrangement has ended and my resignation stands.”
The former playmaker enjoyed cult hero status at West Ham during his playing career, spending four and half years at the club during which time he scored 52 goals (many of them of the spectacular variety) in 141 appearances.
