The Stamford Bridge club have scouted the 17-year-old over the two years months and struck a deal with his club O’Higgins. The player known as Cimbi will now make the move to the Premier League at the end of the Chilean league season.
Cuevas caught the eye representing the Chilean under-20 and impressed the Chelsea management team during a trial at Stamford Bridge in November, which sealed him the transfer to England.
The midfielder will give Chelsea the left-sided option currently missing from their squad, although he is not certain to go straight into the first-team picture despite the impending exit of Frank Lampard on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Chelsea are also expected to bolster their midfielder ranks further in the summer with the signing of Spanish star Isco from Malaga and Everton’s Marouane Fellaini.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Nigerian international defender Kenneth Omeru has been told he will be part of the Chelsea first-team squad next season when he returns from a season-long loan spell at Dutch Eredivisie side Den Haag.
