Man United are set to challenge Arsenal in the race to sign Magpies midfielder Yohan Cabaye according to Italian source TuttoMercato.

The 27 year old French international is being linked with a St James’ Park exit but neither Arsene Wenger or Sir Alex Ferguson is willing to meet the former Lille man’s £34m release clause but are ready to offer have that fee and will hope that Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley may be tempted to sell a player who cost just £4.8m.

Ashley financed a raft of transfer additions in January and may look to balance the books in the summer and Cabaye may well be keen on moving to a side that can offer him a taste of Champions League football.

Cabaye had an excellent first season in the Premier League last term, impressing during Newcastle United’s fine 3-0 win over Man United, which could in turn sparked Ferguson’s interest in the cultured midfielder.

Ferguson may feel it’s time to refresh a midfield that still relies on old hands Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick.

Prior to his move to the North-East Cabaye spent seven seasons in Lille’s first team, making over 250 appearances and was a pivotal member of Rudi Garcia’s Ligue 1 title winning side in 2010/11. Cabaye is now a regular member of Didier Deschamps national team set-up.
