Liverpool will mount a £20m bid to sign Newcastle United winger Hatem Ben Arfa according to the Daily Express.

Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers has targeted the French international wide-man for a summer move and will look to use forward Andy Carroll as a bargaining chip to land the former Marseille attacker.

The 25 year old is currently out following a hamstring injury but is a player Alan Pardew does not want to lose, so much so that he is looking to offer Ben Arfa a new contract in the hope of quelling interest from prospective suitors.

This source believes Ben Arfa is open to a possible Liverpool switch and has also spoke of his desire to play for Ligue 1 big spenders PSG.

Given that Magpies owner Mike Ashley bankrolled the addition of six new players in January there is a chance that an offer of £20m for a player who cost around £7m would be considered.

Rodgers is keen on beefing up his attack in view of the drop in form from youngster Raheem Sterling. It also appears that Moroccan Oussama Assaidi is not part of Liverpool’s long term plans, having failed to cement a regular spot in the starting eleven so there may well be room for the addition of Hatem Ben Arfa.

Ben Arfa has scored ten goals, including some of the spectacular variety, in 48 appearances for the St James’ Park outfit.
