Chelsea will be appointing a new manager in the summer with interim boss Rafael Benitez will not be staying on beyond the end of the season, which he confirmed in his post-match tirade on the club following Wednesday’s FA Cup win over Middlesbrough.
Mourinho is the bookmakers’ favourite to make a return to the club where he was in charge for three years, while former players Gus Poyet and Gianfranco Zola are have been linked with the post along with Everton’s David Moyes and Malaga’s Manuel Pellegrini.
But, according to the Evening Standard, talks are already underway with Mourinho, who was sacked by owner Roman Abramovich having failed to make the Champions League one of the five trophies he won during his time at Chelsea, over returning to the hot seat in the summer.
The relationship with Abramovich is understood to have been repaired and, with Mourinho set to quit his position at Real Madrid in the summer after a season of troubles on and off the pitch, Chelsea appear to hold the upper hand over Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain who are also keen on appointing him.
