Man United are eyeing up a bold move to sign in-form Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane according to the Daily Express.

Sir Alex Ferguson is apparently very impressed by the recent displays from the 19 year old Frenchman and will battle PSG in pursuit of the Real Madrid starlet.

It seems hugely unlikely that the Spanish giants would consider offers for Varane and given that the former Lens man is contracted to the Bernabeu side until 2017 any bid would have to be astronomical to succeed.

Ferguson had been tracking Varane whilst he was at Lens but Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane helped persuade the youngster to move to join the La Liga side in the summer of 2011.

Varane has racked up eight La Liga starts this season, during which time he has looked assured and helped his side to collect five clean sheets. He was also impressive when up against Man United in their Champions League meeting last month.

Sir Alex Ferguson has seen his defence struggle for consistency this term and with Rio Ferdinand nearing the end of his career and Nemanja Vidic struggling with injuries there is certainly scope for a further defensive signing, especially as it appears that youngster Phil Jones is seemingly more adept at filling a midfield role than a central defensive one.
