Arsenal are set to make an approach for AC Milan midfielder Nigel De Jong in the summer.

The Gunners’ boss Arsene Wenger is keen to tighten up his midfield as he looks to reduce the number of goals conceded from preventable mistakes.

Jack Wilshere has often been deployed in a more defensive-minded central position this season, but it is widely thought that the young England star is better suited to a more advanced position.

Wenger has identified De Jong as the perfect solution is his desire to add some steel to what can sometimes be a fairly lightweight midfield. While the likes of Cazorla, Arteta and Rosicky are undoubtedly able to thread a pass, there is often a notably absent physical presence in the middle of the park.

De Jong is well-known for his nefarious challenges and carries a questionable disciplinary record, but Wenger is ready to overlook the Dutchman’s rap sheet as he looks to restore his Arsenal side to the Premier League elite.

The midfield enforcer is reportedly keen to return to the Premier League as he prefers the weekly physical battles that suit his playing style.

Arsenal are now poorly-placed to secure a Champions League spot as they currently sit in fifth place but are five points behind Chelsea and seven behind bitter rivals Tottenham in third.
