Reading are now without a manager after sacking McDermott following last weekend’s defeat to Aston Villa.
Di Matteo, who has reportedly already been approached by The Royals, has been out of the game since being dismissed by Chelsea in November last year.
He heads up a trio of potential successors with Paolo Di Canio and Alan Curbishley also amongst the running. It is thought that Di Matteo is the front runner having guided Chelsea to their first Champions League title just last year. He also managed West Bromwich Albion for two years between 2009-11 where he guided the club to promotion back to the Premier League.
McDermott had been in charge at Reading since 2009 and has earned himself many plaudits in the process. Brining the club back up to the Premier League after a five year absence he then had to attempt to keep the club up on a tight budget. The defeat to relegation rivals Aston Villa on Saturday saw Reading mired further into the dropzone, ahead of QPR only on goal difference.
A mid-season revival in January saw him win the Manager of the Month award, but apparently this was not enough to safeguard his position after a run of four consecutive defeats, which forced owner Anton Zingarevich to call time on his tenure in charge.
