Monaco are set to make an ambitious attempt to bring Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney to the club according to The Daily Star.

The future of the England international has come under intense speculation in recent weeks after Rooney was dropped for United’s key Champions League tie against Real Madrid.

That has sparked reports that Rooney is set for a summer exit from Old Trafford with the likes of PSG, Barcelona and Real Madrid touted as potential destinations.

It appears Monaco are about to throw their hat into the ring and also compete for the England star’s signature.

The French side are currently owned by wealthy Russian businessman Dmitry Rybolovlev is keen to restore the club amongst the European elite.

Monaco are currently managed by former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieiri and are sitting top of Ligue 2.

The club are keen to mark their return to the top flight with a marquee signing and are hoping to tempt Rooney with a mega-bucks, tax-free deal.

Conflicting reports have emerged from the Old Trafford club in recent days with some sources suggesting the player is almost certain to leave whilst others are claiming the player is set to commit his future to the club.
