It looks as though the Jean Makoun saga is finally set to end with Villa ready to offer him to French side Rennes, the Express & Star understands.

The 29-year-old is currently on loan at the Ligue 1 side and has impressed this season despite making just 11 appearances, but are apparently keen to bring the Cameroonian international in on a cut price deal.

Signed by Gerrard Houllier in 2011 for £6.2 million, he made just a handful of appearances for the Villans before Alex McLeish shipped him out on loan to Greek club Olympiacos the following summer. He was moved out again at the beginning of this season by Paul Lambert.

Makoun made his name in France, first with Lille and then with Lyon but has been unable to convince either of the last two Villa managers to take a chance on him, much to the chagrin of many claret & blue supporters who have been crying out for a steady and established in the middle of the pitch all season.

However, chairman Randy Lerner’s continued desire to shave unnecessary expenditures off of the wage bill could force Villa’s hand into letting him go for just a fraction of what they purchased him for.
