Arsene Wenger is ready to make a move for Man City defender Joleon Lescott after being informed that the experienced England man is available for a drastically reduced asking price.

Roberto Mancini has been told to conduct a squad clear-out by his Man City board who will not make funds available for significant transfer additions until the Etihad Stadium playing staff is greatly reduced.

The 30 year old will now be allowed to leave Man City for as little as £6m and Wenger is readying a bid to sign the former Wolves and Everton man as he looks to strengthen a defence that has looked shaky throughout the current campaign.

Lescott has fallen down the Man City pecking order with youngster Matija Nastasic forcing him out of the starting eleven, leading to the England international to secure just 11 Premier League starts this term.

A move to Arsenal may well tempt Joleon Lescott though the defender will have to take a pay-cut but will demand at least a two year contract, which Wenger is willing to offer despite the player’s age.

Lescott was a prominent member of Mancini’s Premier League title winning side, making 41 starts in all competitions last term.

Though Wenger has three international centre-back options at present Per Mertesacker, Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny have all had below part seasons and the Gunners boss may well be ready to offload one of the trio this summer.

Wenger is also set to offload Johan Djourou, who is on loan at Hannover, and will not offer Sebastien Squillaci a new contract when his current deal comes to an end in a matter of months.
