Newcastle United are set to join the race for St. Etienne star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang according to The Daily Mail.

The striker has been in scintillating form for the Ligue 1 side and has been attracting the attention of a host of top European sides.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG are all preparing summer bids for the player.

But Newcastle are hopeful that they can persuade the player to join up with the club’s growing contingent of players who have previously plied their trade in the French top flight.

Magpies owner Mike Ashley reportedly travelled to France to watch the player in action during St. Etienne’s 2-2 draw with PSG.

The club’s chief scout Graham Carr has provided Ashley with some glowing reports in recent weeks and Ashley was keen to check out the player for himself.

Newcastle are keen to bring in attacking reinforcements over the summer after losing striker Demba Ba to Chelsea during the January transfer window.

The player is currently valued in the region of £10 million but it is thought that St. Etienne are hoping to use the interest in the player to bump that up to a figure closer to the £15 million mark.
