Newcastle and West Ham are both thought to be battling each other in the race to sign Toulouse defender Aymen Abdennour, according to TalkSport.

The Tunisian international is earning a number of admirers for being the stand out performer in an uninspiring Toulouse side who are currently sat in 11th place in Ligue 1.

However, the Premier League sides may face some almighty competition in the race for his signature as Barcelona are reportedly also keeping tabs on him as they seek a replacement for veteran captain, Carles Puyol.

Magpies boss, Alan Pardew can get the low down on Abdennour thanks to his army of acquisitions from France and Hammers chief, Allardyce is keen to bring in more steel to his back line.

Abdennour has been at Toulouse since 2011after joining from Tunisian club Etoile du Sahel. A short loan spell at Werder Bremen materialised in 2010 but the Germans opted not to extend his deal, paving his way to the South of France.

The 6’2, 23-year-old is versatile, operating mostly in the centre of defence, he can be equally as capable at left-back and will sometimes venture forward into midfield. Thought to cost in the region of £5 million, Barcelona will be favourites to snap him up, but if anything should fail to go ahead in Spain, Newcastle and West Ham will be eagerly waiting in the wings to pounce.
