Chelsea are expected to make a bid for highly rated Southampton teenager Luke Shaw according to the Metro.

The Stamford Bridge side’s main competitors in the race for the 17 year old are Tottenham and Arsenal, though Southampton’s £16.5m price tag may well put the Blues in the driving seat in the race to capture the talented left-back.

Roman Abramovich may well see Shaw as a long term replacement for Ashley Cole, who has signed a one year contract extension and the Russian billionaire may have no issue with the big valuation placed on the Southampton defender.

This source perhaps strengthens the case for a move to Chelsea stating that Shaw was born in Kingston-Upon-Thames, just a stones throw from the West London club’s Cobham training ground.

Shaw has taken to life in the Premier League with astonishing ease given his tender years. Handed his first senior start last August the attack minded wide-man has made the left-back spot his own and has been a virtual ever present this term, making 23 appearances in all competitions.

The Southampton man has already been called up to the England Under 21 squad despite the fact that he is still some months off his 18th birthday.
