Tottenham boss, Andre Villas-Boas, faces still competition in the shape of Real Madrid in his bid to land Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan, TalkSport understands.

The 22-year-old midfielder was drafted in by Jurgen Klopp after Nuri Sahin left for Real in 2011 and it’s now believed that he heads up a new shortlist drawn up by Madrid’s top brass.

One of Dortmund’s key players, Gundogan often goes by under the radar and is sometimes overshadowed by names like Gotze, Lewandowski and Reus. So far this season he has made 21 appearances, scoring once and assisting four times.

Signed from FC Nuremberg for just £4.8 million, he is now believed to be valued around £21 million. Many suggest that he is worth the amount as his sharp passing ability and clever runs belie his 22 years.

Madrid are set to lose out on Xabi Alonso this summer with the Spanish international being linked with a return to Liverpool, and Jose Mourinho sees the five-cap German international as the ideal replacement.

The midfielder is reported to be happy in Dortmund, however, and he would do well to heed the warnings of Sahin, now back at Borussia after unsuccessful spells in the Spanish capital and Liverpool.

Comfortable in all three positions in the centre of midfield, Spurs would have a talented all rounder on their hands if they are able to persuade him on a move to London.
