Sunderland boss, Martin O’Neil is seeking a reunion with Spartak Moscow’s Aiden McGeady, The Mirror reports.

O’Neil had the Irish winger under his charge at Celtic and was widely linked with a move for the 26-year-old whilst he was the manager at Aston Villa.

The 26-year-old was also linked with a move to Wigan in January but they couldn’t persuade him to join in the relegation fight and most recently Everton have expressed an interest.

McGeady has had an indifferent time in Russia. After having been named as the second best winger of the Russian Football Union’s best 33 players in 2010 he has since slipped under the radar and rumours of his girlfriend’s unhappiness in Moscow have been thought to be a contributing factor in him wanting a return back to Britain.

Sunderland chairman, Ellis Short, is said to still have faith in his manager and is willing to back him financially in the summer. However, McGeady is reported to be on £50,000 a week at Spartak so any proposed deal could be likely to hang on where he will fir into the wage structure at the Stadium of Light.

McGeady joined Spartak from Celtic in 2010 and is valued at around £7.5 million. He has made 72 appearances for the Moscow side, scoring 10 goals.
