Reading’s new boss Nigel Adkins has been receiving relegation advice from an unusual source.

While fans of the Royals may be pleased to hear that the wise words are coming from a World Cup winner, they might be less happy to find out that it is a rugby player.

According to The Mirror, former Saints manager Nigel Adkins has been seeking the advice of former England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson.

After being sacked from Southampton, Adkins kept himself busy by enrolling on coaching courses. He took them alongside former Manchester United and Holland goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Saw and ex-Chelsea and Tottenham Sporting Director Frank Arnesen.

There were also a number of rugby coaches taking the courses, including former England coach Andy Robinson and Adkins has admitted he spoke at length with Robinson and also went for dinner with Wilkinson.

Reading fans have been split by the news that Adkins has been appointed to the Madejski hot-seat.

The club were also linked with Roberto Di Matteo, Luis Enrique and Gus Poyet and there are some who believe the club should have tried to seal a high-profile name for the job but others are pointing to Adkins’ good record at Southampton before he was ruthlessly sacked to make way for Mauricio Pochettino.
