Arsenal are readying a summer bid for 28 year old Welsh international skipper Ashley Williams according to the Daily Mail.

Williams has had a solid season at the heart of the Swansea City defence and comes highly rated by chief Gunners scout Steve Rowley.

Arsene Wenger may feel the need to strengthen his shaky defence given that the likes of Per Mertesacker, Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny have all failed to maintain a high level of consistency and with the likes of Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci on their way out there is certainly space for a defensive addition.

Williams is into his sixth season at the Liberty Stadium side having helped to guide the League One side through the Championship and into the Premier League. The former Stockport County man has matured into the most solid centre-backs in the top tier but appears keen to move onwards and upwards, perhaps having ambitions beyond those he feels he can achieve at his current South Wales side.

Some may question whether Williams is an improvement on the three top internationals Wenger has to select from but perhaps above all else the Swansea City defender has the ability to offer a more steady, if not spectacular, presence at the back.
