Andre Villas-Boas is hopeful he can lure Lazio Mauro Zarate to White Hart Lane this summer and according to the Metro the Tottenham boss will look to snap up the Argentine on a free transfer.

The 25 year old has stated his intention to leave the Stadio Olimpico and has become such a disruptive influence in the dressing room that Villas-Boas hopes the player’s contract will be canceled so that the former Birmingham City player can join the North London club for free.

Lazio are holding out for a £5m fee that Tottenham may well be ready to fork out, though a number of other sides are also keen on the versatile forward, including manager-less Sunderland.

Zarate spent last term on loan at Inter Milan but failed to make an impact and has thus far been handed just one Serie appearances this season. The technically gifted forward has racked up 25 goals in 104 appearances for Lazio and could be a player who could help boost Tottenham’s attack.

Villas-Boas has been indebted to Gareth Bale as the Welshman has helped the shoulder the goal-scoring burden with Jermain Defoe going off the boil after a good start to the campaign, failing to score in his last dozen Tottenham appearances. Emmanuel Adebayor has proven even more disappointing, netting just two goals in 19 top tier matches this season.
