Interim Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez insists that his Stamford Bridge side are having a great season despite the groundswell of Blues fans opinion being to the contrary. The Daily Mirror reports on the claim made by the Spanish boss following his side’s narrow win over Man United, which helped to book a semi-final clash with Man City.

Though Chelsea are some 22 points off the Premier League pace and out of the Champions League, which they of course won last term, Benitez believes all is fine and dandy;

“We’re in the top four with a game in hand. We’re in the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the quarter finals of the Europa League. It’s a great season. It could be even better.

“My priority is the top four and trying to win the next game, in the Europa League. This win was very important for everyone here.

“The priority for us is to finish in the top four, we know that, but at a top side you have to win every competition.”

Perhaps Rafa has a point but he may not wish to count his chickens too swiftly. If Chelsea fail to win either cup competition they are still competing in AND don’t achieve a top four finish then it’s fair to say that the season has been nothing short of a disaster.

Benitez has little to lose at this stage on a personal level. Chelsea fans will not change their opinion of the former Liverpool boss either way.

Rafa Benitez is going at the end of the season and all parties are aware of this fact and any successes garnered from the current campaign would perhaps be something of a bonus.
