Marseille Boss Insists Joey Barton Still Has Future At The Club

Midfielder upset club bosses with Thiago Silva row.

Joey Barton has found himself at the centre of controversy once again with Marseille. The midfielder has been having a public spat with PSG centre-back Thiago Silva in recent days.

Barton has enraged his Marseille bosses after questioning whether Silva was pre-op or post-op transsexual.

The statement has been widely criticised and Barton suffered a stinging rebuke from a prominent anti-homophobia group in France.

But Marseille manager Elie Baup insisted he was unconcerned with the player’s comments according to Sky Sports. He reiterated that Barton was an important part of his team and would continue to play for Marseille until Baup was told otherwise.

The French boss insisted his responsibilities lay only with what happens on the pitch.

The spat between Silva and Barton started after the Brazilian centre back referred to Barton as an English midfielder for Marseille whose name he had forgotten. Barton had criticised Beckham and his PSG team mates and Silva suggested it was because nobody was talking about the former QPR midfielder.

Marseille released a statement on Wednesday apologising for Barton’s inappropriate comments and revealing they had instructed the player to put an end to his public feud.

PSG have been resolute in their defence of Silva and have warned Barton they could seek to take action against him.
