Chelsea are reportedly ready to cut their losses on Michael Essien according to Tutto Mercato Web.

The Ghanaian midfielder was once a key part of the Chelsea team and was amongst the most feared defensive midfielders in the world.

But a spate of injuries problems and poor form has led to him falling out of favour at Stamford Bridge.

The player was deemed surplus to requirements last summer by Roberto Di Matteo, who has since been replaced by Spanish boss Rafa Benitez, and sent out on loan to Real Madrid.

Madrid boss Jose Mourinho was more than happy to take on the player’s services as the Portuguese remains a firm admirer of the player following their time together at Stamford Bridge.

Essien has gone on to make close to 30 appearances for the Spanish giants this season and while he finds himself behind the likes of Xabi Alonso and Sami Kheidra in the Bernabeu pecking order, is reportedly happy with life in the Spanish capital.

Chelsea believe Essien to have no future at the club and have reportedly told the La Liga Champions they can retain the midfielder’s services at no cost.

It remains to be seen how Madrid will react with Mourinho touted as potentially returning to Chelsea this summer.
