According to Spanish source El Mundo Deportivo Barcelona are toying with the idea of making an offer for Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.

The Catalan side could well do with strengthening their defence, with Tito Vilanova having very little in the way of options at the back, but a move to sign the Bernabeu star is something of a shock. Clearly players very rarely pass between the El Clasico rivals but there is perhaps an inkling such a move could be a plausible one.

Jose Mourinho has had a number of run-ins with the former Sevilla man and if the Portuguese boss stays at Real Madrid past the end of the current campaign then the likes of Ramos, and dropped skipper Iker Casillas, could well have to consider their options.

The 27 year old adaptable defender, who can play effectively both as a central defender and at right-back, is into his eighth season at Real Madrid and has over 100 Spanish national team caps to his name, in other words a player with exceptional ability. Therefore it’s likely that any number of Europe’s ‘Elite’ would be keen on signing the Andalusian should he push for a move.

This source claims that both Casillas and Mourinho have warned Real president Florentino Perez that they would look to leave the Spanish capital club if Mourinho wasn’t axed and they may both stay true to that ultimatum come the summer.

Vilanova’s Barcelona squad is blessed with attacking verve and a number of midfield talents but at the back they are certainly short of options. Veteran Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique are the club’s main central defensive options and on many occasions the club has had to turn to Javier Mascherano to put in a shift at the back and have also looked to give youngsters such as Marc Bartra and Martin Montoya the chance to impress.

A move to sign Ramos would greatly improve the Catalan side’s defence and would simultaneously weaken their main opposition into the bargain. A move that Vilanova would certainly welcome.
