Chelsea are reportedly taking a keen interest in Benfica centre-back Ezequiel Garay, a player who also greatly interests Man United, and it appears that the two Premier League heavyweights are set for a titanic battle to land the former Real Madrid according to Portuguese source Abola.

The powerfully built 26 year old struggled to make a name for himself during his three year stint at the Bernabeu but has re-ignited his career in Lisbon and has been in outstanding form this term to help Jorge Jesus’s side mount a genuine Primeira Liga challenge.

FC Porto have won the last two domestic titles but Benfica are now seven points clear at the top of the table having gone undefeated the entire season. The Eagles have conceded just 15 goals in 25 matches and much of that is down to Garay, who has been watched by a host of Premier League scouts this term.

Chelsea and Man United are said to have both send representatives to view Garay in action as Benfica beat Newcastle United 3-1 in their Europa League quarter-final first leg encounter and will have been impressed with his composed display.

With John Terry playing something of a limited role in recent months there is perhaps scope for a central defensive signing this summer though the Blues do have the likes of Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill and David Luiz who are all top quality performers in their own right.
