Di Canio is reportedly putting the player through a gruelling new training schedule as he hopes to improve their performances between now and the end of the season.
The Black Cats know they face a tough physical and mental battle ahead of them as they look to retain their Premier League status and Di Canio is keen to ensure they are up to the job.
Sunderland go head to head with bitter rivals Newcastle this weekend on the back of nine match winless run and are desperate to put that right as they look to finish the last six games of the season strongly.
But Gardner has hit back at the fitness jibes claiming that they are a load of rubbish. Gardner insisted that the team was made up of professionals who work hard in training every day no matter who the manager is. Gardner pointed out that if the players didn’t put their all in, they would be found out on the pitch.
