Kevin Keegan has given his backing to Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini according to Sky Sports.

The Italian boss has found his position increasingly come under question after a disappointing season at the Etihad Stadium.

Mancini led the club to their first ever Premier League title last year, and remains popular amongst the club’s fans, but he has not been able to reproduce those kind of performance during the current campaign.

City recorded an impressive 2-1 victory over their city rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday but that still left a gap of twelve points between the two clubs highlighting how far off the pace City have been this season.

The club also suffered the humiliation of a group stage exit from the Champions League although the club were drawn alongside Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Ajax.

But Keegan has leapt to Mancini’s defence insisting his achievements last year, and the club potentially winning the FA Cup this year, mean he should be given a chance to rebuild the squad over the summer.

Mancini has been criticised for his signings last summer, which saw the arrivals of the likes of Scott Sinclair, Jack Rodwell and Javi Garcia who have all failed to make much of an impact on the City first team, but Keegan pointed out that those players are still young and it remains to be seen whether their signings will come to be considered a success.
