Magpies stunned at St James’ Park by Black Cats.
Newcastle United were stunned by an inspired performance from Sunderland as they lost the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.
The Premier League encounter was important for both sides as they attempted to ease the fears of relegation, but it was the Black Cats who took the lead.
When Jonas Gutierrez gave the ball away, Stephane Sessegnon was on hand to collect a pass from James McClean and his low shot from distance was accurate and true, and beat Tim Krul in the Magpies goal.
Paolo Di Canio – as expected – celebrated like a man possessed.
It was 1-0 at the break, and when Newcastle striker Papiss Demba Cisse had a goal wrongly chalked off for offside there was a clear feeling that it wasn’t to be their day.
Sunderland extended their lead through Adam Johnson’s classic Arjen Robben routine of cutting inside from the right onto his left foot and curling into the far corner, and a fantastic strike from David Vaughan.
