Arsenal Steal March On Liverpool By Opening Talks With Talented Defender

Swans defender could be set for summer move to Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal have stolen a march on Liverpool in the race for Swansea defender Ashley Williams, according to Goal.com.

The Gunners are known to be firm admirers of the centre back and are keen to bring in defensive reinforcements during the summer transfer window.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is keen to add to his defensive options after becoming frustrated with the erratic displays of his backline during the current campaign.

Mistakes from the likes of Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have cost the Gunners valuable points in the race for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Wenger is keen to bring in a defender who can marshall the backline next season and has identified Williams as the man for the job.

The Swansea captain has been in fine form at the Liberty Stadium this season and played an integral part in the Swansea team that went on to lift the Capital One Cup after beating Bradford 5-0 in the final at Wembley.

It now appears the Gunners have stepped up their interest in Williams after opening talks with the player’s representatives last week.

The North London club now look ready to press ahead with a £12 million deal for the player.
