Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League Hopes Suffer Blow

Key winger is losing his race to be fit to face the champions this weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur wide man Gareth Bale looks like missing out through injury on the visit of Premier League title holders Manchester City to White Hart Lane on Sunday, says the Daily Mail.

The Wales international suffered what looked like a serious-looking ankle injury in the closing stages of the first leg of the North London club’s Europa League last-eight tie with Basle at White Hart Lane on April 4.

However, the initial prognosis on the playmaker’s injury was encouraging, with head coach Andre Villas-Boas indicating that the player could be back in action within as little as a fortnight, although the Portuguese’s assessment now appears a little optimistic.

The 23-year-old has still not yet returned to first-team training with the rest of his team-mates ahead of the vital fixture with Roberto Mancini’s in-form champions, which means in all likelihood that he will not start Sunday’s match at White Hart Lane.

Instead, it is now more realistic that Bale will take some part in Spurs’ next top-flight fixture at Wigan Athletic on April 27.
