Chelsea have set their sights on Bayern Munich forward Mario Gomez according to the Daily Express.

The Stamford Bridge side had set their sights on Atletico Madrid forward Radamel Falcao but have earmarked a move for 27 year old German international Gomez as an alternative if their advances to sign the Colombian fail to come to anything.

Gomez has been a largely unused commodity at the Allianz Arena after the Bundesliga side opted to bring in Mario Mandzukic over the summer, who then proceeded to put in a consistent level of displays leaving the former Stuttgart man to warm the bench since recovering from ankle surgery.

When called upon Mario Gomez has proved a very able finisher, scoring ten goals this season despite making just eight Bundesliga starts.

Roman Abramovich may be keen to bring in a ‘Marquee’ signing this summer to take the edge off a poor season and this source, perhaps inaccurately, that a fee of £25m would be enough to see Chelsea snap up Gomez.

Given that the Bayern Munich man racked up 48 goals for club and country in 2011/12 it’s clear that Gomez is a player who could ably do a job leading the Chelsea line and his physique and hold up play may well be attributes that see the big forward become a Premier League success.

Clearly any such move would lead many to assume that Fernando Torres would be on his way in the summer.
