Liverpool are reportedly keen to strengthen their defence this summer with Brendan Rodgers targeting two players who have seen their respective sides, Reading and QPR, relegated from the Premier League.

The Anfield boss is looking to bring in 24 year old Republic of Ireland defender Alex Pearce, who is out of contract in the summer and has thus far rejected as many as eight new deals offered by the Royals, who are clearly keen to keep hold of the centre-back.

Pearces has been frozen out of first team action due to his unwillingness to put pen to paper on a new deal and is probably very keen to run down his contract and move to Liverpool on a free transfer, and thus look to negotiate an improved deal on the basis that he would cost the Merseyside club nothing.

Rodgers may well be keen on bringing in another central defender given that veteran Jamie Carragher is to hang up his boots this summer.

Liverpool are also one of a host of Premier League sides tracking QPR keeper Julio Cesar according to the Daily Express.

The experienced Brazilian international custodian has had a fairly decent season with QPR, despite the fact that the Loftus Road side have been doomed to relegation for some months, and it seems likely that the West London side will look to offload many of their big earners as they look to balance the books following their relegation to the Championship.

One does wonder if Brendan Rodgers needs to bring in another keeper given that Pepe Reina is now the club’s undisputed number one option. The Spaniard had been challenged for portions of the campaign by Aussie Brad Jones but has successfully won the spot after a series of solid displays that followed something of a shaky start to the season.
