Serie A champions elect Juventus are hoping to stump Tottenham Hotspur in the race for Real Madrid full back Fabio Coentrao, according to The Express.

The 25-year-old has been on Spurs’ radar for some time with boss Andre Villas-Boas an admirer from the pair’s time in Portugal when they were at Benfica and Porto respectively.

However, reports coming out of Italy suggest that Juventus are ready to follow through on their interest in order to get the jump on their rivals from North London. Spurs have been in the market for a new left back following the news of Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s impending departure but have yet to firm up any interest as they are also interested in Lyon’s Samuel Umtiti.

Plus any Spurs deal for the Portuguese international could be hit by Real’s insistence that he be used as a makeweight in the deal that sees Gareth Bale head to the Spanish Capital.

Juventus are also looking at new options at left back as Kwado Asamoah hasn’t fit in as well as they were hoping and the reported fee of £21 million for Coentrao is thought be suit the Italian club more than it is Spurs unless they can secure Champions League football next term.

Coetrao joined Real from Benfica in 2011 and has so far made 27 appearances for the Spaniards, scoring just once.
