A look at who would make the all-star Merseyside XI.
In goal, Tim Howard is the obvious choice. The American has gone on to become one of the league’s best goalkeepers after his difficult spell at Manchester United, meanwhile Pepe Reina has gone downhill. Glen Johnson and Leighton Baines would be two excellent attacking full-backs for any team, while Daniel Agger and Phil Jagielka look a solid pairing in the centre of defence.
In the heart of the midfield, Steven Gerrard and Marouane Fellaini is a partnership that would surely flourish. Both strong in their defensive duties as well as offering plenty going forward, the two could rotate their duties brilliantly if played together. An honourable mention should go to Lucas Leiva, who would complement either of these players well, but the two are more outstanding individual talents.
Adding the excellent Steven Pienaar into Liverpool’s attacking unit would give the Reds a creative midfield to rival the best. Daniel Sturridge and Coutinho hold off the likes of Toffees duo Leon Osman and Kevin Mirallas in supplying the ammunition to the undisputed star of the team, Liverpool’s Luis Suarez. Overall, a combination of Merseyside’s best players looks like one that could certainly challenge for the title.
