Chelsea are apparently among a number of clubs considering moves to sign highly-rated Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy according to the Independent.

The 22 year old has had another solid season and may well help to keep the Latics up but may then consider his options this summer and could feel the time is right to take a step up.

The former Hamilton man had his pick of prospective suitors back in 2009 and opted, sensibly, to move to the DW Stadium where he knew he would get regular football and could learn the trade and now after four seasons in the top flight, and over 120 appearances for Wigan, the Republic of Ireland international would do well to look to move on this summer.

Blues owner Roman Abrmamovich has financed a number of moves that adhere to the club’s youthful transfer policy in recent seasons and McCarthy may well be another target they look to bag though a lot could well depend on whomever takes over from Rafa Benitez as the permanent Chelsea boss at the end of the current campaign.

Arsenal are also said to be keen and may well be in more dire need of adding some steel and determination to their midfield than Chelsea, who could see McCarthy as an ideal player to challenge the likes of John Obi Mikel and Oriol Romeu for a central midfield berth protecting the club’s more creative talents.
