Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard does not know if rumours of Jose Mourinho’s return to the club are true, but admits he would welcome the special one back to Stamford Bridge.

Current interim manager Rafael Benitez will leave Chelsea at the end of the season, with Roman Abramovich keen to sign up somebody else for the job on a permanent basis.

The likes of Manuel Pellegrini and Jurgen Klopp have been linked with the Blues post, but at the moment the favourite to be hired by the Russian owner is Mourinho, who had great success at the club in his first spell between 2004 and 2007.

The Portuguese tactician fell out with Abramovich on that occasion, before leaving to enjoy further success at Inter Milan and Real Madrid. He is now unhappy with his current situation at Real and looking for yet another move, and is understood to be happy to work under Abramovich again.

Lampard’s future is also up in the air, with the 34-year-old not being offered a new deal at Stamford Bridge. He has been linked with moves to Monaco and LA Galaxy, but admits he is excited at the prospect of Mourinho returning.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “I think it would be a great thing for the club, I think he is a fantastic manager.

“I’ve seen speculation before and a completely different manager walks through the door so we never know on that front but he is certainly one of the greatest managers, if not the greatest, in world football, so I’m sure the club and the fans will be happy to have him.”

On his future at the club, he added: “Let’s see what happens. I’ve always said I want to spend all my career here. I think everyone knows that.”
