Stamford Bridge side hot favourites to sign Old Trafford forward.

Chelsea are reportedly edging nearer to a spectacular deal to sign Man United striker Wayne Rooney as prospective suitor Bayern Munich have apparently pulled out of any potential move for the England man according to the Daily Mail.

The Allianz Arena side will not move for the 27 year old leaving the way open to a possible move to Stamford Bridge. Rooney is said to have made a verbal request to leave Old Trafford and could be tempted by a move to the West London club, who are certainly in need of striking additions.

Rooney has been used in a more withdrawn attacking role this term with Robin Van Persie being used as Man United’s chief attacking weapon and the former Everton man has even been left out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s recent starting eleven, fueling speculation that he could leave the club.

The fact that incoming manager David Moyes has something of a fractious relationship with Rooney may also be a factor that could lead to a Chelsea switch, though one would imagine Man United would prefer to sell to a non Premier League rival if they were indeed to entertain the prospect of selling the club’s fourth highest goal-scorer of all time.

With Fernando Torres going some 16 Premier Leagues games without a goal and Demba Ba managing just two top tier goals since his January move to the club it seems likely Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich would look to sign a striker this summer.
