Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio has told The Shields Gazette that he hopes to complete a permanent deal for loan star Danny Rose from Tottenham.

The young left-back has had a good season for the Black Cats, despite their fight against relegation. However, it is not clear yet if his displays will earn him a recall to the Spurs first team.
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas is said to be eyeing up a left-back in this summer’s transfer window, being linked in particular to Inter Milan’s Alvaro Perreira, which suggests he does not rate Rose sufficiently to make him first choice at White Hart Lane next year.
Di Canio has only taken over as Sunderland manager recently, but has been impressed with Rose’s performances, though he admits he could improve on the defensive side of his game, something he will hope to work with him on if he joins the club on a permanent basis.
“He’s our player at the moment,” he said. “Sunday will be his last game and then we will see. I don’t want to talk about the future because we have to focus on the next game.
“In my opinion, he can improve a lot defensively. He’s an attacking-minded left-back, but he has to improve a lot defensively.
“He’s got a great future in front of him. He’s a powerful guy. The strength and elasticity he’s got mean he can run forward with the ball and beat people easily.”
Rose will of course be unable to play against parent club Spurs, but Sunderland will hope they have enough in their locker to secure Premier League survival in their final two games of the season.
