Arsenal are closing in on Swansea City defender Ashley Williams after a second round of talks with the player’s representatives according to Goal.com.

The 28 year old Welsh international centre-back is said to be keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium and only a matter of a difference of opinion between the two clubs in terms of a fee stands in the way of a deal being struck.

The Liberty Stadium side are hoping to secure as much as £12m from the sale of the experienced battler whilst Arsenal are willing to offer £8m for the former Stockport County man.

This source suggests that a move for Williams is with a view to the Swansea City man replacing Thomas Vermaelen, with the Belgian said to be on his way out with Barcelona keen on the Gunners skipper who has had an up and down season.

Williams has had a standout couple of campaigns at the centre of the Swansea City defence though Arsenal fans may wonder if the Wolverhampton born defender would represent an improvement on the club’s current trio of defensive optios, indeed they may conclude that the likes of the aforementioned Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker are all superior performers to the Liberty Stadium man.

Ashley Williams moved to Swansea City in 2008 and has made 215 appearances for the South Wales side.
