Sunderland’s highly-rated goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has been linked with a move to Serie A with Napoli, according to talkSPORT.

The 25-year-old Belgian has been a stand-out performer for the Black Cats this season despite their right with relegation, and has attracted interest from Arsenal and other top clubs.

The Gunners have been linked with him as well as a number of other goalkeepers, as they look to replace the out-of-form Wojciech Szczesny.

However, they will now face competition from Napoli for Mignolet, as the Italian club look to strengthen their squad ahead of next season. They are set to finish second in Serie A and will want to make some signings to prepare for Champions League football.

Their current first choice goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis is 36, and they will want a younger shot stopper as a long-term replacement for the Italian. They also face the prospect of losing star striker Edinson Cavani, and will look to reinvest his hefty transfer fee throughout their squad.

If they land Mignolet, Arsenal will switch their attention to Asmir Begovic of Stoke City, and may also take a punt on Victor Valdes, who should be available after declaring his intention to quit Barcelona.
