Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is targeting a return to football over the pre-season break following his recovery from a chronic bowel condition, the Telegraph reports.

The 29-year-old was diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis two years ago and has faced a battle to get his career back on track ever since. He made a brief comeback in December but had to cut it short for the second successive season after the action aggravated the condition and many at the club feared that he would never play football again.

However, the Scotland international had a corrective operation to cure the illness last month and he now believes that a return to the sport is just around the corner and hopes to hand new boss David Moyes a boost by being ready for the club’s pre-season programme.

Moyes is a known fan of the midfielder, having tried to sign him for Everton on two separate occasions and will be in touch to check on his progress when he takes over for Sir Alex in the next couple of weeks.

Ferguson paid tribute to Fletcher during his retirement address to the Old Trafford crowd at the weekend, asking the fans to send him their best wishes.
