Chelsea are set to launch a summer bid to sign Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira according to Italian source CalcioMercato.

The West London side are said to be lining up a €23m (£19m) move for the German international as Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich sets about improving his Blues squad, with an eye to perhaps securing a long awaited deal to re-appoint Jose Mourinho as the manager of the Stamford Bridge side.

Chelsea could perhaps benefit from the signing of another central midfield option and arguably Khedira is a big improvement on the club’s current options in this position, with the likes of John Obi Mikel, Oriol Romeu and Michael Essien being among the Blues defensively minded midfielders.

Khedira has had an up and down time of it since his move to the Bernabeu back in 2010, initially battling Lassana Diarra for the enforcer role in Real Madrid’s starting line-up before making the place his own this term and has made a total of 124 appearances for the Spanish giants over the course of three seasons.

Real Madrid are said to be considering moves to re-shuffle their squad this summer but it would still perhaps be a surprise if the La Liga side were to consider selling Khedira, unless of course the German were to push for a summer exit, in which case a bid could be accepted.
