Manchester United are considering a move for Penarol’s young right-back Guillermo Varela, according to the Daily Mail.

The 20-year-old caught the eye of United scouts during the build up to the under-20 World Championships in Turkey this summer, in which he is expected to play, and has been invited over to England for a two-week trial where he is now training with the first team.

He has broken into the squad with the five-time Copa Libertadores winners in Uruguay but has yet to start a game for them, however, he is highly regarded in his home country and is expected to be a bright star for the future.

The deal to take him to United on trial was brokered by the agent, Paul Betancourt, who organised the move of Uruguayan midfielder Gaston Ramirez from Italian side Bologna to Southampton last summer.

The draw for the Under-20 World Championship was annouced recently and Uruguay find themselves in a tough group containing New Zealand, Uzbekistan and Croatia, though they should be expected to qualify alongside the Europeans.

Qualification from that group could see them face England in the knockout stage, who are in the next group alongside Chile, Egypt and Iraq.
