Spanish source CadenaSer claim that 31 year old Barcelona striker David Villa is ‘very close’ to completing a deal to sign for Tottenham.

The experienced Spanish international, his nation’s top goal-scorer of all time no less, has been courted by a number of sides but it appears that White Hart Lane boss Andre Villas-Boas is to win the race to sign the former Valencia man as Tottenham look to strengthen their attack.

Villas-Boas has been indebted to Gareth Bale for an end product this term with Jermain Defoe entering a lengthy Premier League goal-scoring drought and Emmanuel Adebayor only really making an impact in the last couple of weeks of an otherwise disappointing individual campaign.

Arsenal had been tracking Villa during the January transfer window but failed to secure a deal to bring in the Barcelona man.

David Villa had been reassured by Tito Vilanova that he would play a more prominent role in his starting eleven but that has not transpired and the striker is keen to seal a move to secure regular first team football so as to make sure he is still a pivotal part of Vicente del Bosque’s plans ahead of the 2014 World Cup Finals in Brazil.

Villa has been handed just 14 La Liga starts this season but has still managed a very laudable total of 15 goals in all competitions.
