Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio will use his knowledge of Italian football to help his side land a bargain, with a possible free transfer of Lazio defender Modibo Diakite, according to the Shields Gazette.

The Italian manager will look to strengthen a Black Cats side that narrowly managed to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season, and has identified a central defender as a main target.

John O’Shea and Carlos Cuellar have been the team’s main central defensive pairing this season, but the club have had a poor year and conceded 53 goals.

A move for Diakite may be an ambitious one though, as his availability on a free transfer has also alerted the likes of Napoli and Juventus, and Sunderland may not be able to compete with such big names if they make the French defender a target.

However, the player’s agent Ulisse Savini has welcomed Sunderland’s interest, and says he and his client would be willing to negotiate with the club over a possible move to the Stadium of Light.

“If they call us, we would be honoured to speak with them,” he said.

Sunderland have also been linked with Nancy defender Salif Sane.
