Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar has backed Wayne Rooney to find his best form at Old Trafford and stay with the Premier League champions according to the Daily Mirror.

Van Der Sar believes that Rooney’s dip in form has been overhyped and that he will stay at Old Trafford an prosper.

The former Dutch goalkeeper said, “Players have indifferent seasons and maybe Wayne’s been overtaken by Robin Van Persie this year [in terms of goals] but it’s the hard work that he puts in for the team…”.

Rooney has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford ever since he started on the bench in Manchester United’s Champions League 2nd round game against Real Madrid in March.

It was then revealed in May that Rooney had asked Sir Alex Ferguson for a transfer, believing that he needed a fresh start.

Since then Sir Alex Ferguson has retired as Manchester United’s manager and has been replaced by Everton manager David Moyes, the man who gave Rooney his first senior start.

With Moyes now at Old Trafford, it appears that Rooney is having second thoughts about a move away from Old Trafford and Van Der Sar believes that the England striker will struggle to find a better club atmosphere.
