Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has spoke of his desire to see teammate Wayne Rooney stick around at the club next season, Sky Sports reports.

The 22-year-old had been linked with a move back to his home country after a difficult start to his career at Old Trafford, but a strong showing this season saw him included in the Premier League Team of the Year.

And now that his future with the club seems a little clearer, he is hoping that Wayne Rooney will stay there with him.

“I can’t imagine that Rooney will not be at United,” he said. “He is one of our captains and points of reference on the pitch. He still has to win many titles with us at United.”

De Gea also said that the prospect of heading into pre-season training without Sir Alex Ferguson will take some getting used to.

“I felt great sadness when I heard about Ferguson’s goodbye,” he added. “It will be strange not to see him on the bench or on the training ground. He is everything at Manchester United. He is Manchester United.

“He [Moyes] had done a great job at Everton and now all of us have to support him.

“To substitute Ferguson is a huge target but if they chose him to do it, it is because he is prepared.”
