Manchester United Sign Uruguayan Defender: Guillermo Varela First Signing of David Moyes Reign

The highly rated young defender will fly in for a medical at Old Trafford today.

David Moyes has made his first signing as Manchester United manager, bringing in Penarol defender Guillermo Varela.

BBC Sport reports that Varela will fly into London today to have a medical with the Red Devils before being confirmed as a Manchester United player.

Varela plays for Uruguay under 20’s and was on trial at United during the end of last season.

It appears that he has impressed enough for the club to sign him on a permanent basis.

“I will have a medical on Friday and on Saturday I join the Uruguay Under-20s national team,” said Varela before he left Uruguay on Thursday.

David Moyes is known to have approved the deal for Varela and the young defender will hope to try and break into United’s first team during the course of the season.

Moyes could be busy in the transfer market this season, with speculation linking him with a host of Europe’s top players.

The Scot is thought to interested in several midfielders, including Kevin Strootman, Luka Modric and Cesc Fabregas.

Cristano Ronaldo has also been linked with a move back to Old Trafford and United have also been linked with Real Madrid target Gareth Bale.
